Chapter 10
Isobel couldnât sleep, so to get away from Jensonâs snores she went out to the deck. That didnât do much good, either since it was the place where sheâd given herself to a demon. How had she allowed that to happen? She needed someone to talk to, and usually when she felt this way she went to her mother. That wasnât going to happen, obviously.
But she needed someone to talk to, someone who would offer her comfort about what had just happened. There were only two people that she knew whom she could trust, and that would be Bea and Katia. It was the middle of the night, but she knew Bea was a night owl.
Isobel pulled out her phone and sent a text message. Bea responded immediately.
Bea: Where in the daylights are you? We have looked and looked and there is not a trace anywhere, not on any scrying map or spell. Your father is about to lose his mind.
Isobel: It doesnât matter where I am because we wonât be here for long.
Bea: Where are you going? Please, please tell me so I can put your father, and Dante, to ease.
Isobel: No, Iâm sorry. But I do have an issue I need to talk about.
Bea: ARE YOU KIDDING ME?
The fact that her friend was yelling at her through text messages didnât make Isobel feel any better about things. Bea was not the type to yell at someone. Before she could respond, another text came through.
Bea: You expect me to help you, but you want to keep me on the fringes? The fact you donât trust me really upsets me.
Isobel: I do trust you. Itâs just⦠this must be done on my own.
Bea: You mean on your own with a demon.
What was it about text messaging that seemed to make things worse? When someone screamed at you in person you could tell exactly how upset they were, could hear their tone and knew that, at some point, things could be made right. But when someone was upset with you and the conversation was taking place over text it was hard to get a handle on what they were feeling, how things could be fixed.
Isobel: Please donât be angry with me.
Bea: Tell me where you are.
Isobel started to text the answer If there was one thing she didnât want to do it was upset her friend, when something magical and immensely powerful grasped her fingers together and squeezed. She looked around, expecting to find Jenson standing behind her. Instead she saw Sandi.
Dread filled Isobel that had nothing to do with what happened earlier this evening. âDid I wake you?â After sheâd asked the question, Isobel wondered how that would have happened. Sandi was at the main house. But had she somehow sensed Isobelâs unease?
Without answering Bea, Isobel turned the phone off and stuck it in her pocket.
She didnât want to tell Sandi about how tonightâs events had upset her, how she just needed someone to talk with and thatâs why she was wandering around outside and texting.
